Any self respecting Social Network aficionado knows that hardly a day goes by when a new application, plug in, technique or strategy is developed. And let’s face it… internet geeks like myself just have to share! Social Network Marketing techniques are the opposite of static and the tools you use, whether provided by the Social Networks themselves or 3^rd party applications are constantly evolving.

Anyhow here are my favorite bookmarked Blog / Resource websites with a short explanation of what they are all about. These are in no specific order as the subjects they are addressing are widely divergent. I would greatly appreciate any comments about this list and very much welcome suggestions of other helpful websites to check out.

1. Megaleecher.net

In their own words as posted by their admin,” The one stop portal for all the latest,  freshest and most interesting stuff on the internet, Bookmark for latest technology, software, internet, computing tips tricks and tweaks…”

I love this site because of all the OS (open source) offerings and a first shot at many beta applications. Office software, PC maintenance, gaming, phone network applications…you name it! They review it and often you can grab coupons or jump on “first 100 to sign up” freebie offers for stuff everyone else is paying big bucks for. Interested in the latest from Microsoft?, Google?, Apple?, Cisco?, Adobe? This is where to find it…and get the first shot at using it.

2. Mashable

This website is self proclaimed as “THE Social Media Guide” and they do certainly attempt to be. They do incorporate a technical aspect like Megaleecher but the overall emphasis is more on sociological and cultural impact of social media.

Twitter is heavily emphasized and I think Mashable must be the most RT’d (Re-Tweet) blogsite on the internet. This is a great reference website for comparison stats and Mashable is heavy into lists if data is your thing. My one complaint is that their damn page reloads every 2 minutes! GRRRRR….

Technorati collects, organizes, and distributes the global online conversation.

3. TECHNORATI

Technorati, as is evident from their own ABOUT US blurb, is evolving. It’s evolving into an advertising / affiliate machine of gargantuan proportions…look out Google! However, that being said, Technorati ever was and for the time being anyway is the best source to find the very best bloggers in the business. If you want to learn blogging..go here. OK I don’t even know where to begin praising these guys. I meekly bow before the holiest of holy shrine to Web Building Resources.

If your involved with Social Media at all then you know how much it helps to have some technical know-how. I learned HTML scripting on these hallowed pages in a straightforward self-paced way even a “tech challenged” bonehead such as myself could easily grasp. Learn HTML, PHP, SQL,  CSS, XHTML, ect., ect., ect……the list is nigh on endless. Self testing pages. Tons of easy to use practice pages so you can tell what your screwing up. PLUS references such as tags, attributes, colors, symbols, again…on and on. All dead easy to find and all totally FREE!

5. ADDICTOMATIC

Technically Addictomatic is a search engine not a true website but it’s my blog and my list so your all going to have to live with it! This a custom built blog trollers paradise. Simply type into the banner field the topic of choice click “Create” and BAM! You are presented with the top 5 latest blog titles about your topic from Twitter, YouTube, Digg, Bing News, Technorati, Delicious, Ask, Twingly, WordPress, Bloglines, Wikio, Google Blogs and more….

So dig in to Blog buffet and chow down!

That quote, in a nutshell, neatly sums up an appropriate approach to online Social Networking. By positioning yourself as the expert in your field and showing a willingness to help others in your network you are able to introduce online discussions and build interest in your products and services.

Online Social Network Marketing is basically a classic step selling formula. Give something for free, establish trust and a two way relationship, then present an opportunity for potential clients to buy at a special price or online connections only coupon. Later once you have delivered on your offer ask for that upgrade!

First present your credentials and establish a solid online presence. Then be helpful to others in the framework of your social network. Establish an online medium presence that is two way to facilitate questions and discussion. Which medium depends on your business model. For example we have a client here at NewLeadHunter.cc.co who runs a Personal Fitness business specializing in Pilates instruction. Her medium of choice was to start an instructional video series and discussion group based on YouTube. By targeting new connections using her demographic information she was able to provide free at home coaching via YouTube and easy access to join her club for those who enjoy a group setting. A car dealer, real estate agent, custom made jeweller…there is a medium of choice for everyone. Could be videos, blogs, article submission, you name it! We even facilitate free MP3 downloads for one of our musician clients.

OK I am sure you get the basic idea. Now the basic premise being understood the etiquette of social networking follows the precepts discussed. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Be receptive to invites from others. For example in Twitter 90% of people you “Follow” will follow you back.

Be responsive to others questions (whether they are directed specifically to you or to the world at large). Group discussion boards as well as Public Answer board websites are a great place to chime in with your 2 cents.

Join others at their other social networks. If you have connected with someone on Facebook join them in Twitter as well. They will notice that you are interested in them and will be more responsive to you. Flattery will get you everywhere!

Recommend others products and services. You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours is very much a part of Social Network Etiquette. This is especially true if your connection is in a parallel type business as affiliate referencing to your business is a crucial piece to your social networking plan.

Check out your connections blogs, articles, Power Points, ect. And leave comments. If the material covered is appropriate and not in direct competition with you direct an RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feed to your Social Network, Personal or Business website.

All this playing nice – nice being said, if you have a connection monopolizing your comment board or blatantly advertising to you and your friends, don’t be shy to ex-friend them. Remember people ARE notified when you connect with them but ARE NOT if you un-friend them.

Whether you are a “newbie” to online social network marketing or have already taken the plunge there are a few basic concepts to grasp as you proceed. First and foremost if you are just starting it is important to know that you need to build your network slowly but consistently. If you are like me you tend to procrastinate things until it just has got to be done, then the flood gates of enthusiasm open and I get everything possible done in a limited time frame. Unfortunately this method is counter productive when it comes to social network marketing.

I have seen many examples of this type of behaviour. When someone you follow in Twitter bursts out with 20 tweets in one day and nothing the rest of the week you tend to ignore the deluge. Same applies to other Social Networks like Facebook as you never know when a contact will be checking their page. It would be very easy for you to get lost beneath the fold and out of their view if you are dedicating one day of the week to your networking efforts.

One way to maintain a consistent presence is to build you profile little by little and step by step as every time you update your information your online contacts will be notified as to your changes. This will help keep you in the limelight and show you have a continuous interest in your online presence and your online contacts.

Another valuable time management tip is to treat your social networks just as you would your email. No one is going to sit on their email until Friday afternoon and then try to tackle the entire mess at once! Most of us will dedicate a ½ hour a day to sorting, deleting and most importantly replying to our important potential clients. It works the same way for Social Networks. If someone shows an interest in you and/or your products and services it is crucial to get back to them ASAP!
